Can Laser Genesis Damage Your Skin?

You care for your skin using the best products available for cleansing, protecting and moisturising. Now, you're considering Laser Genesis to achieve even more dramatic results and beautifully glowing skin, but you want to ensure that the procedure is safe for your skin. Let's take a closer look at the process and the science behind its effectiveness and safety.

What Is Laser Genesis?

Laser Genesis is a non-invasive resurfacing procedure that uses nonablative lasers or light to stimulate collagen production in your skin. Dermal therapists use Laser Genesis to:
  • Reduce the size and colour of age spots
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines
  • Soften mild or moderate acne scarring
  • Smooth uneven skin tone
  • Repair sun-damaged skin
Most people receive Laser Genesis on their face and neck, although the treatment is also suitable for the hands, shoulders and décolletage.
Laser Genesis is a quick procedure with no downtime afterwards. Often referred to as a "lunch break" procedure, the process takes about 30 minutes. Depending on your desired results, you may need three to six treatments. Schedule your appointments two to three weeks apart to minimise redness and irritation.

Is Laser Genesis Safe for Your Skin?

A study of 50 Japanese patients treated with YAG Laser Genesis found that resurfacing is effective and safe for most patients. The study also demonstrated that the improvements in the appearance of dilated pores, wrinkles and overall skin texture are both noticeable and long-lasting.
In that study, 96% to 100% of participants were pleased with the improvements to their wrinkles, skin texture and dilated pores. When the study authors reviewed the results 90 days later, skin smoothness remained consistent across all participants.
A smaller clinical trial at Indiana University examined the effectiveness of Laser Genesis as protection against UV-induced skin cancer. The study found that the treatment empowered the skin's healing factors in response to UVB radiation. In other words, this trial shows the overall efficacy of YAG Laser Genesis as a method of skin rejuvenation in the instance of sun damage.

What Side Effects Can You Expect?

While you may experience some redness immediately after the procedure, your skin will calm down within a few days. None of the participants in either clinical study mentioned above reported any noticeable side effects. Share any concerns about sensitive skin or previous reactions to other laser treatments with your dermal therapist.
