What to do after your laser hair removal?

As we slowly leave the layers and colder months behind and welcome sun and warmth. There is no better time to begin your laser hair removal journey. You might already be on the train or are tossing up whether you want to make the change. Here at Lavish, we look after your skin to ensure you are getting the most out of your appointments.

Below are our aftercare tips to make sure your skin is protected and ready for your next appointment. Please note, recommended appointments vary between individual clients, but between 4-10 sessions are usually recommended for the best results, with treatments typically booked 4-6 weeks apart.

Swelling + redness;

Don't fret if you notice swelling and redness in the area, this is normal and should last a few hours to days, depending on your skin conditions and sensitivity. We recommend having a nice cool shower, this will soothe the area and calm your skin. Additionally, you could also add a cool pack to the area.

Sun safety;

We recommend staying out of direct sun for 1-2 weeks post laser treatment and avoiding exercise that could get you hot and sweaty. This is to ensure that there is no unnecessary heat in the area, aiming to avoid potential bacteria to grow.

However, we understand that especially in summer the sun is avoidable, make sure you are reapplying your sunscreen frequently to avoid sunburn and sun damage to your skin.

In between treatments;

There’s a lot of talk about how and if you should remove the hair in between treatments or not. It can be hard to know what's the best for your skin and how you can ensure that you are ready for your next appointment.

For the best results, we recommend you see us every 4-6 weeks to ensure that your laser routine is up to date. As you go to more appointments, the hair gets thinner, causing you to shave less in between treatments.

When shaving in between appointments, make sure you are letting your skin rest after your appointment, try and avoid shaving for 48 hours after the procedure. Prior to your next appointment make sure you exfoliate a week before and shave the area 1-2 days before.

No fake tan!

Fake tan is a huge no-no during your laser hair removal journey.

Why is this important? The laser is attracted to the pigment in the hair, the dark pigment absorbs the light and converts this to heat. The heat then affects the hair follicles to delay hair growth.

This means that if the skin is tanned, burned or there is discolouration, the laser will be attracted to the dark pigment and this will cause the laser to be drawn to your skin not the hair.

Don’t worry, if you do have any pigmentation, feel free to call our team and we can reschedule your appointment. Unfortunately, we’ll not be able to perform the treatment on you. Please abstain from fake tanning during the weeks between appointments and if you do, make sure that this is all removed before your appointment.
